BRINGING
UNIQUE STYLE TO EVERYDAY ITEMS

We like to bring you a range of unique products that will be used and loved for years to come.

ABOUT US

Gracy Mae CROCHET was created to bring you beautifully handcrafted and unique items made from quality materials that you are not able to buy from a regular store! We especially love creating beautiful products using ethical & eco-friendly materials where possible such as natural fibers like cotton, recycled yarns and our fair trade fabric yarn. Fabric yarn is created from items or off-cuts of fabric from the textile and T-Shirt manufacturing process that would of usually been discarded into landfill. The scraps are cut into strands and made into rolls without re-dying to be used for crochet, macrame and more. Recycled yarns such as recycled cotton or silk yarns are made from remnants of products that are processed and dyed gently to be made into a variety of textured yarns to give new life and purpose.

Our main supplier of fabric yarn sources their products from fair trade producers - which mean a fair wage and safe working conditions for their workers. They then ship to us where possible, with a carbon neutral shipping company packed in materials made of 100% recycled or very high recycled content.

Gracy Mae  CROCHET ship products in recyclable packaging materials where possible, we re-use packaging materials where possible, and we dispose of any un-usable packaging items thoughtfully.

BEGINNINGS

Gracy Mae CROCHET was started in January 2020 in a small beach town in Central Queensland, Australia. We started with an idea of bringing you beautiful handcrafted items for your home that were ethical, sustainable and purposeful. After discovering the perfect materials to use that matched my ethical business goals, Gracy Mae Crochet was born!

Why the name Gracy Mae CROCHET? My middle name is actually not Mae - remember the singer Macy Gray? After one of her songs hit the big time, (I Try released in 1999), my mother switched the first letters of her name around to give me a nick name when I was 9 years old. Thanks Mum! Fast forward to being a mother myself, I now get to make up embarrassing names for my own two children!

MEET Grace

Being a self taught left-handed crochetier, I had to learn mostly from right handed sources - which wasn't always easy. It wasn't long before I was able to not only create, but to really enjoy the craft, and make stunning, unique items. I loved the versality of crochet to be able to create almost anything, so soon I decided that making things for others is something I would really love to do!

It took me some time to decide what my business focus should be, all I knew was that I wated to make sure the things I made were not only useful, but purposeful. I researched into the best materials to use in the craft that were more environmentally friendly or kinder to the earth so that I could make a difference with my work. I discovered each year, a lot of plastic fibres from artificial wool and acrylic fabric products end up in landfill or in the ocean from one way or another, and I wanted to make sure I did everything I could to reduce this impact from me!

I decided I wanted to be as sustainable as possible and use natural fibres or recycled yarn products where I could, to create items that were able to be used for many years to come. That is when I discovered T-Shirt yarn, a fabric yarn that is produced from offcuts of material from the textile and T-Shirt manufacturing process that would of otherwise ended up in landfill. The 80-95% cotton jersey material is cut and rolled into a skein, giving each roll a totally unique colour, texture, thickness and feel. After seeing the versatility of the product and the styles of items you can make with it, I knew I had found my match. With a clear idea of my ethical goals and how I would achieve them through my work, I was able to create a beautiful line of products that I could truly be proud of.

I love learning every day and trying out new stitches or patterns I have never tried before – there is always something new to learn with crochet! I have written some patterns myself and love sharing those with other crochetiers. I also love learning other crafting techniques that compliment my business and extend my knowledge.
